How to Bet on Esports in Ukraine
Gambling became popular in Ukraine after they declared themselves as an independent country from Russia following the Cold War of 1991. Without any specific rules or regulations surrounding the market there were approximately 50 different establishments across Ukraine by 2000 that offered gambling services. One of the more well known groups at the time was the Olympic Casinos Group whom dominated the Blackjack, Roulette, and Poker sectors of the market. By 2003 the Ukraine Government decided to put in place some regulations to help fairly maintain the state of the gambling market. These new regulations permitted Bingo, Horse Racing, Roulette, Cards, Dice, and Slot Machines within the country but had no influence on the growing sports betting market. Despite recent attempts to secure the gambling market, illegal practices continued to happen allowing underage gamblers to play at various venues across the country.
After a devastating fire in 2009 killed 9 people in a Ukranian Gambling Hall the government was prompted to revisit the regulations surrounding the market. The current prime minister put this law in place banning at form of gambling within the country. “On Prohibition of Gambling Business in Ukraine” stated that ‘any placing of bets in which the outcome is found to be determined by chance in whole or in part is considered gambling under the law, and is banned, except where permitted by law’.
Fast forward to 2018 and gambling is still illegal in Ukraine. With this said it has not stopped citizens from betting on esports in recent years as most of the major bookmakers from around the world accept clients from the country. The laws may be strict on paper, but without a strong censorship program, actually eradicating online gambling seems unrealistic.
