Team BDS crowned RLCS 2022 World Champions

After 10 days of intense goal-scoring action, Team BDS have been crowned the RLCS 2022 World Champions. This is their biggest achievement ever in the history of the Rocket League roster. The young boys beat G2 4-1 in the finals to bring the trophy home.

The holy grail of Rocket League tournaments, the RLCS World Championship took place at the Dickies Arena of Texas this month. 24 teams from 6 different regions met to fight it out for the prize pool of $2,085,000 USD. 8 teams directly qualified for the group stage while the rest were wildcard entries. 8 of the 16 wildcard entries qualified for the group stage. All matches followed a best of 7 format.

BDS’s Run

Team BDS directly qualified for the group stage of the tournament thanks to their ranking in the EU Circuit. They started off in Group A along with the likes of Moist Esports and Version1. Their worthy competitor in the final was G2 who beat the likes of FaZe, NRG and Furia to make it there. But in the end, Team BDS proved to be too powerful as they beat them 4-1 to become the champions of RLCS 2022 World Championship.

The players of Moist Esports used to play together at Team Queso. The trio witnessed a reasonable amount of success while playing for the European team. They even won the 2021-22 Winter Split Major being second to G2 Esports. However, shortly after, Team Queso’s roster was transferred to Moist Esports.

What’s insane about this roster is that the combined age of Joyo(16), vatira(17) and rise.(16) is only 49. This makes them the youngest roster ever to win an RLCS title.

The team went straight down to business being runners-up of their inaugural tournament, the Europe Regional Event of Dacia Spring Cup 2021-22. They continued to demonstrate their flair in regional events before Moist showed up at the Spring Split Major.

Moist’s run at the Spring Major

Moist Esports qualified for the S-tier tournament thanks to their circuit ranking in the EU region. The European young guns started off strong winning their first series 3-0 against NA rivals, OpTic Gaming. Soon after, disaster struck as they lost 3-1 to Version1 being relegated to the lower brackets. In rounds 2 and 3 of the lower brackets, they picked up wins against Pioneers and Team Liquid. The competition was intense against Spacestation Gaming in the lower quarter-finals, narrowly beating them 4-3. But Moist Esports really put their game faces on in the lower semi-finals and finals. Karmine Corp and  Version1 fell prey to their ruthlessness with scorelines of 4-1 and 4-0 respectively.

The stage was now set for the grand finals between Moist Esports and representatives of a minor region, Team Falcons. The finals had everything a Rocket League fan could ask for. Losing their first match of the series, Moist won three straight matches tilting the odds in their favor. But the Falcons leveled the playing field as they went on to win the next two matches. Game seven took place at the Champions Field and Moist did the inevitable. They won game seven forcing a bracket reset. Another series means seven more matches to determine the winner but Moist was determined to not delay it any further. They won four straight rounds to seal the deal and pick up the championship title.

The team also picked up two individual awards with vatira winning the Defensive MVP and Joyo being crowned the Overall MVP of the Major.

North America

As expected, the North American lineup of teams is fierce yet again. However, the absence of NRG is sad to say the least. They had a rather disappointing Spring split and as a result, can’t make it into the competition this year. Team Envy wouldn’t mind that at all though. All four among G2, FaZe, Version 1, and SSG were present at the Winter Major last time and would look to give the rest a run for their money. But all eyes are on G2 as they would look to defend their Major title.

The teams of Europe are strong in their own might. Like NRG, Dignitas will be on the sidelines at this Major too. They did, however, qualify for the World Championship. In the case of Europe, Moist Esports (previously Team Queso) and Team BDS are the ones to look out for. Both the rosters have picked up multiple titles this year already and they will be looking to add more to their trophy shelf.

Oceania is home to some fierce competition thanks to Pioneers, PWR and Renegades. The Renegades will be sitting it out this time despite them being at the top of the rankings table for Oceania. That might change since the other two teams will be grabbing vital points from the Spring tournament. However, that’s based on the assumption that they will pick up a few wins against other teams. There’s no guarantee of that happening thanks to the level of competition this year.

South American Major

  • Furia Esports
  • Team Secret

Furia and Team Secret are deservingly coming back to this Major as well. Furia was the first South American team to reach tip six at the Winter Major. They were super close to reaching top four but lost to Moist. They will be looking to at least replicate their level of success at the last Major.

Asia Pacific

  • Gaimin Gladiators

The hopes and dreams of Asia lie on the shoulders of Gaimin Gladiators. Gaimin has tried multiple times before to make it to the Major but fell short to regional rivals. However, they persevered and this time they’re making their Major debut.

Middle East & Northern Africa

  • Team Falcons

Team Falcons are relieved to make it to the Spring Major and for a good reason. They were denied their visas at the Winter Major despite qualifying for the event. This led them to transfer organizations and to set things straight. Now they’re back with new vigor and will be looking to make a mark.
